I am very interested in brewing my own beer in the near future. How much trouble can I expect in trying? I may start trying in the fall, but I will be living in an on-campus apartment (which is dry) so I'd have to be relatively discreet. Does the scent usually fill up a room? I only worry about getting caught because I'd have to throw it all out; I'm 21, so I wouldn't get in any real trouble. Thanks guys. I'll be offering my first batch to all who help me in this thread .

Smells like you are cooking something sweet. I think you could get away with it fine.

There is a very distinct smell while brewing and fermenting. It doesn't really smell like an open bottle of beer, but there is definitely a "brew process" smell.
If you brew indoors the whole house will smell of beautiful malt and hops that usually lingers for a day. Definitely doesn't smell like finished beer, but sweet and hoppy. If you brew outside then everyone in town will think you're doing something illegal. Big boiling pots, propane burners, and copper wort chillers do look suspicious.
The fermenting process smells like yeast (and depending on the beer it can get really smelly). I usually keep mine in the basement so no one really notices the smell.

I guess my short answer was really no as in depth and precise... but I think both of us agree that it doesn't smell like "beer" in the sense that others will know what you're doing.

The smell is awesome, but anyone who recognizes it will know what youre doing. It can make a mess too if you get any boilover. It takes a good amount of space to store all your pots, fermenters, etc. so youre probably more likely to get caught with all your supplies than actually brewing the beer. Have any friends that live off campus? Having a friend that gets into it with you will make it a lot more fun, and cleaning up will be easier. Plus splitting your costs initially will make it easier for you. good luck, and happy brewing!
