This was a review of Allentown Brew Works that I did back in December of 2008:
For my sister's birthday my wife and I took her and her boyfriend to Allentown Brew Works, because I knew she had been wanting to try their Rude Elf’s Reserve Holiday Ale.
Handy GPS got us there and back safe and sound, and it was a nice night for some local craft brews. I didn't take any notes that night, so here's a basic overview.
Hop Explosion (O.G. 1.072 ABV 7.0%) - This was amazingly tasty. The description was fairly basic "Brewed with pale, and crystal malts, hopped with Tomahawks" Definite West Coast style American Pale Ale. This was amazingly drinkable, although served a little colder than I would have expected. Nice round hop flavor, with just the right bitterness. As it warmed up a bit I started getting some DFH 90min vibes, but all in all a very nice brew and I wouldn't mind having another.
Copper Kettle Pale Ale (O.G. 1.053 ABV 5.4%) - This was a basic American Pale Ale - super smooth and went down like a champ. Very little bitterness and subtle hop flavors. Definitely a session beer. Nothing really outstanding.
Pawn Shop Porter (O.G. 1.058 ABV 5.7%) - Just a plain Jane solid porter. Nothing exciting or extraordinary.
Rude Elf’s Reserve (1.086 O.G. 10.5% A.B.V.) - "Our Silver Medal winning Belgian style holiday beer brewed with dark Belgian candi sugar and special spices. This brew has a spicy aroma and flavor with a sweet malt taste. At 10.5% alcohol it is sure to warm you up during the holiday season."
The Rude Elf's Reserve was definitely worth the trip. Everything you could have hoped from a Belgian holiday beer. The green apple flavors were amazing and perfectly placed with the other spices and candi. A 1/2 gallon growler was going for about $25, so I didn't get one, but I'm kicking myself now. Guess I'll have to wait until next year to have one again.
If you're out Allentown way it's worth the stop. Nothing extreme about any of the beers, but a nice solid collection of craft brews.
